About

Melvin Crispell III hails from a rich musical legacy. His father, world-renowned musician Melvin Crispell, Jr., composed and played on award-winning songs for some of gospel music’s biggest artists. His mother, Tunesha Crispell, was a celebrated gospel singer whose voice was featured on several well-known choir recordings along with a critically acclaimed solo project. With the sudden death of his father when Crispell was 16, followed by the untimely demise of his mother when he was 18, he was able to navigate these times through his relationship with God and music and that the trauma was not the end of his story. In 2019, he competed on and won the ninth season of BET’s Sunday Best. After winning, he signed with RCA Inspiration and released his debut album, I’ve Got A Testimony, in 2020, which features the Grammy-nominated single “Wonderful Is Your Name,” originally composed by his late father. Melvin’s live sophomore album, No Failure, followed in 2023. Encouraging faith in navigating life’s ups and downs and pushing past comfort zones to get to a place of victory, the album includes the single “Alright” and his second Grammy-nominated single “God Is,” which brought a fresh breath of air to the 1976 Gospel classic, reminding listeners of the many attributes of God. Through his own journey of healing and overcoming, No Failure serves as a transparent message of hope that “there is no failure in God.” This sentiment is reflected in Melvin’s journey as a gospel artist, as his solo career has continued to soar. To date, Melvin now has a career total of four Grammy Award nominations, six Stellar Award nominations, and four Dove Award nominations. He marked three award wins in 2024, receiving two Stellar Awards including Male Artist of the Year, and one Dove Award. He garnered his third and fourth Grammy nominations for the 2025 Grammys, with his third project Covered Vol. 1. On this EP, released in June 2024, Melvin honors some of gospel music’s most cherished artists such as Cece Winans, Tye Tribbett, Mary Mary, and more. Covered Vol. 1 is Grammy-nominated for Best Gospel Album, with his recording of Mary Mary’s “Yesterday” Grammy-nominated for Best Gospel Performance/Song. Melvin has also been featured in performance or recordings with various artists such as Jason Nelson, John P. Kee, Maverick City Music, Maranda Curtis, and many more.
