The Tanglewood Guide Program
Complementing the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s efforts initiatives to provide educational opportunities for emerging musicians, the guide program supports the next generation of leaders in arts administration and nonprofit management. Recent alumni of the Tanglewood Guide program have gone on to full-time roles at organizations such as the Metropolitan Opera, Houston Symphony, Boston Baroque, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
Guides carry out a variety of essential operations and public relations roles at Tanglewood. They are the first point of contact for the public in person, helping to orient new visitors and answer questions about the festival. They staff the backstage areas at performance venues, ensuring the safety and privacy of high-profile guest artists. Guides also assist the box office, Tanglewood Learning Institute, and the artistic, marketing, and press departments with a variety of key projects.
Over the course of their summer, the Guide cohort forms a tight bond, strengthened by group social activities and traditions. They also build professional connections with BSO staff and musicians, learning about their careers through both structured information sessions and informal conversations.
In addition to hourly pay, the BSO provides group housing for Guides from outside of the Berkshires.
Applications for the Guide program open in February.
